Dental Fluorosis - Symptoms, Causes, Treatments

Dental fluorosis is a defect of tooth enamel by the intake of fluoride. Fluorosis can be cosmetically treated but the damage to the enamel is permanent. Some of the common causes of fluorosis include fluoridated water, ingestion of fluoride toothpaste and much more. In moderate and severe forms of fluorosis enamel’s porosity increases to an extent that teeth begin to erode. Moderate and severe fluorosis have pronounced staining that deeply disfigures child’s smile.

People with dental fluorosis suffers embarrassment due to the appearance of teeth. Even though the people affected with fluorosis brush or floss properly the stains may not go away. Mild forms of dental fluorosis result in the discolouration of teeth that appears as white lace like marks on the teeth surface.

How to prevent dental fluorosis?

Dental fluorosis can be prevented by avoiding excessive intake of fluoride by the individuals. Thus excessive fluoride intake by prevented by adopting the following measures:
  • Use another water resources
  • Remove fluoride from the drinking water.
  • Include better nutrition.
  • Provide proper health education.
