Dental Sealants To Protect Your Teeth From Decay

The dental sealants are commonly applied to kid’s teeth. There are some reasons for this:

  • Fissures and cavities are more likely to develop on children’s molars and premolars.
  • Brushing skills of kids are not as strong as adults, so they require extra protection against cavities.
  • Sealants work best when they are applied to a tooth as soon as it comes in.

Dentists mostly recommend sealants to be applied to teeth from ages 4 to 15. This is the period when kids are most likely to get cavities. In some rare cases, they may recommend sealants for baby teeth if it is prone to cavities.

Should kids get dental sealants?

Dentists recommend sealants for most kids as they can have many cavity-fighting benefits. Dental care is lacking among low-income children. In order to ward off tooth decay, governments are taking measures to get more kids tooth sealants.

Studies found that kids with dental issues are more likely to have oral health problems when they become adults. Only 20 percent kids among low-income kids have tooth sealants. But it is 40 percent in the case of kids from higher-income families. The American dental association and other groups are trying to raise those numbers higher.
