Oral Hygiene in Infant Babies

Infant baby brushing

It is never too early to start basic dental care. Basic oral hygiene should be practiced from the time your baby is born. Now you must be wondering, 'They don't even have teeth!'. Yes, that's right. A new born baby does not have any teeth. But, this does not mean that newborns does not require dental care. Their teeth starts forming even before they are born! However, it remains hidden under their gums. Milk teeth begin to sprout only  at the age of 6 months. Babies drink milk very frequently. Unlike adults, it is not possible to rinse their mouths. So, parents should clean their baby's gums with a clean wet cotton cloth after every feed. If the gums are left uncleaned, bacteria will develop on the gums. This will affect the teeth. Healthy teeth comes from healthy gums only. Thus, if proper oral hygiene is not practiced at infancy, it will lead to several dental problems in future.

As your child grows, make them understand the importance of oral hygiene. Some children may tend to neglect it. But don't worry. You must have heard of the saying 'Practice Before You Preach'.Just apply it and you are done. Children look up to their parents for everything. In short, parents should be a role model for their children. Letting them watch you brushing your teeth is the easiest way to get them do the same. Teach them how to brush ( up, down, circular motions) at least for two minutes, twice a day. Use only a pea-size quantity of toothpaste. Also, don't forget to monitor your child while they brush. Check that they brush in proper directions, spit out the paste and rinse their mouths thoroughly.
